Serengeti Energy
Based in Kenya, Serengeti Energy is an independent electricity producer specialising in small-scale hydroelectric projects. Since 2022, STOA has been a shareholder in Serengeti Energy with the aim of increasing access to clean, affordable energy and supporting growth in sub-Saharan Africa.
Challenges
Limited access to electricity and unreliable power grids are the main obstacles to business development in sub-Saharan Africa. The region’s grids are still too fragile to integrate large-scale power plants.
The Project
Serengeti Energy develops small and medium scale renewable power plants with a maximum capacity of 50 megawatts. Its portfolio includes seven operating power plants in South Africa, Uganda and Rwanda. Two projects are currently under construction in Malawi and Sierra Leone. When completed, they will bring the company’s total operating capacity to more than 70 megawatts. Serengeti Energy’s goal is to grow its portfolio to 300 megawatts by 2030.
STOA and its investment team have demonstrated a deep knowledge of the market. They have shown exemplary support, patience and agility.
