MOROCCO
ONCORAD

The project

In May 2023, STOA signed a €42 million investment in the Moroccan clinic group Oncorad alongside CDG Invest, the historical shareholder, in order to finance the group’s development plan. This is also STOA’s first investment in Morocco and marks a strategic shift towards social infrastructure.

What’s at stake

Improving access to healthcare

Since 2014, the Moroccan healthcare sector has undergone a major overhaul, with increasing private sector involvement and major legislative reforms. Indeed, the generalisation of the social security programme, which aims to extend health coverage to the entire population, is leading to a growing need for healthcare infrastructure. At the same time, low public spending in the health sector has resulted in a significant lack of infrastructure and staff, preventing it from meeting the population’s needs. Faced with this failure of the public sector, a range of private clinics is developing, mainly concentrated around Casablanca.

With a portfolio of five clinics and a specialisation in oncology, Oncorad is the leading group of private clinics in Morocco and reputed to be the leader in cancer treatment and radiology. This fund-raising will enable Oncorad to strengthen its footprint in the country and significantly increase its capacity over the next three to five years. In particular, the group will be building 12 new clinics outside Casablanca, especially in medium-sized and/or fast-growing cities.

A key project for the Sustainable Development Goals

STOA’s investment in Oncorad is helping to improve access to healthcare, by increasing the number of clinics able to meet the growing demand for patient care following the roll-out of universal health coverage, and by extending its presence outside Casablanca. This project therefore contributes to achieving sustainable development goals 3 (good health and well-being), 8 (economic growth and decent work) and 11 (sustainable cities and communities).

This transaction is also in line with STOA’s commitment to allocate at least 50% of its investments to the African continent.

Expected results
  • More than 12 new clinics throughout Morocco;
  • Improved healthcare services using cutting-edge technology on the continent.
