Ventos Serra do Mel III
Challenges
The Project
Located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Ventos Serra do Mel III is part of the world’s largest wind and solar farm, the Serra Branca cluster. The project, a new 152-megawatt wind farm developed by Voltalia, benefits from a twenty-year power purchase agreement with Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (CEMIG), a local public utility.
Construction began in March 2020 and the plant was commissioned in the second quarter of 2021. It is equipped with Siemens Gamesa 3.5 MW turbines. The projected climate co-benefits are huge: 90,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent will be avoided each year. It will also help meet Brazil’s growing electricity demand, which has increased by more than 40% in the last two decades.
